The following videos have been produced on behalf of Surrey and Sussex Cancer Alliance by AUTEK CIC and Dimensions UK,  with development and input from NHS Sussex LeDeR team and Cancer Interface team. It provides guidance to healthcare professionals in applying the Mental Capacity Act during cancer screening of people with a learning disability.

We all need to know how to apply the Mental Capacity Act in our daily work. Learning from the lives and deaths of people with a learning disability (LeDeR) continues to identify poor understanding and application of the Mental Capacity Act. Designed to be watched as a whole or just the first half this film, by people with a learning disability (including the soundtrack), will make you think about why we have this important piece of enabling human rights legislation. The second half; assessing capacity and determining best interest for the decision to undertake a colonoscopy, is designed to make you think about how you might formulate and record a conversation to demonstrate you have undertaken a proportionate but robust capacity assessment and followed the principles of best interest for decisions you are clinically responsible for.

Please note this webinar is aimed at Allied Health Professional colleagues.

Learning from lives and deaths - people with a learning disability and autistic people (LeDeR)' is a service improvement programme with the overall aim of reducing premature mortality and achieving longer, healthier lives. Members of Allied Health Professional (AHP) professional bodies are invited to learn more about the part you can play, including what we have learnt from latest LeDeR findings, which this year show some signs of improvement.

AHP colleagues have an important role to play in helping to reduce health inequalities for people with a learning disability and autistic people – throughout this webinar you will hear from NHS England Head of LeDeR about the ways you can make a difference. Offering the right reasonable adjustments is crucial, which is why a Reasonable Adjustment Digital Flag is being created on the NHS spine, to ensure that health and care professionals can record, share, view and review details of the reasonable adjustments that an individual needs. Evidence from CIPOLD demonstrates that reasonable adjustments are needed to make services as accessible for disabled people as they are for everyone else.

At this webinar NHS England’s Deputy Director for Health Improvement will update you on the Reasonable Adjustment Digital Flag and what you can do now to ensure that all disabled people benefit from its introduction from April next year. Our thanks to Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists for co-hosting and Chairing.
