Labelling Blood bottles, Collection & Transportation of Samples

Labelling:

All blood bottles should be labelled clearly and correctly in the presence of the individual who it has been taken from. This is to prevent any mislabelling with the incorrect details and reduces the risk of misidentification of individual samples.

Bottles should be labelled clearly using black ink. Some providers use specially barcoded labels which will have the details of the individual on, they should be placed around the tube covering the label already on the bottle.

Collection & Transportation of Samples:

Practitioners should ensure they are aware of the local procedures for the methods of collection and transportation to the local laboratories for relevant screening. Each area will differ, senior colleagues will be able to advise you of this process.
