ReSPECT is process which creates a personalised recommendation for someone’s clinical care in emergency situations where they are not able to make decisions or express their wishes.
The agreed plan is recorded in a ReSPECT document, which also includes recommendations for whether CPR should be attempted. However, ReSPECT is about much wider care and treatment preferences and is equally applicable to patients for whom resuscitation is or isn’t appropriate.
ReSPECT can be for anyone who wants to record their care and treatment preferences, but particularly those who have complex health needs, are likely to be nearing the end of life, or at risk of sudden deterioration or cardiac arrest.
